Survey Instrument Technician - Summer Help

Triad Engineering, Inc. has an immediate need for SUMMER HELP in the Land Survey Department of our Winchester, VA office.

We will provide training for an enthusiastic, hardworking individual interested in gaining experience for a potential career in the fascinating world of Land Surveying.  

Temporary Position on an As-Needed Basis

Survey Instrument Technician Duties:

  • Follow all corporate and job site safety procedures
  • Maintain equipment by cleaning, completing preventative maintenance, and performing calibrations
  • Assemble and set-up necessary equipment at project site
  • Participate in outdoor field work for a variety of standard types of surveys, under the direction of a Survey Crew Chief
  • Perform survey activities including, but not limited to, leveling, traversing, triangulation, metes and bounds surveys, construction surveys and aerial mapping  control surveys
  • Potential to gain knowledge of the operation, checking and basic field adjustments on transits, total stations, total electronic stations, data collectors, levels, and tripods
  • Perform physical tasks such as: line clearing, setting survey marker  stakes with a sledge hammer, establishing survey  monuments, transporting equipment across terrain and through wooded areas, and working on construction projects
  • Basic knowledgeable of High School level trigonometry, geometry and algebra preferred
  • Ability to learn the reduction and checking of the field notes for the determination of positions and elevations
  • Ability to learn basic sources of measurement errors
  • Ability to learn the  principles of staking and marking
  • Ability to learn how to enter field data and produce positional information (i.e., leveling, traversing, stadia, topographic mapping) with hand-held calculator
  • Ability to learn how to interpret control point records and data sheets, as well as locate points in the field
  • Ability to learn basic plan reading and preparation (i.e., site plans, boundary plans, highway plans, profile and cross sections, horizontal and vertical curves, pipeline plans, foundation plans, and developing existing and finished contours)
  • Ability to learn basic knowledge of the terminology and principles of conventional drafting
  • Ability to learn surveying ethics and technical standards
  • Ability to learn how to record field notes legibly and accurately for standard surveying operations
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and other survey staff
  • Strive to make each project profitable

QUALIFICATIONS

Education 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Additional courses in mathematics and surveying preferred

Experience 

  • Previous survey, construction or engineering related experience preferred

Additional Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Must possess the ability to read, write and perform basic math
  • Must be comfortable communicating with the public
  • Must be comfortable with regular use of email, internet and basic Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be available to work in all types of indoor and outdoor environments

Work is performed under all weather conditions, often on busy streets or construction sites, involves extensive standing and walking, and includes clearing brush, working in difficult terrain, manholes and on difficult slopes. May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds. Occasional office work may be required. Work may routinely require the employee to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear and frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Required vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons with disabilities, as defined by the ADA.
